Thai General Election 2011 is coming close. Some people start to talk more about politics, while some are keeping their mouth shut. I have to say that I know some, just some, about politics but I do have a political preference. And I am willing to talk about it when joining political discussions with friends or others.
One day, one of my colleagues told me not to talk about my political opinions with some groups of people in my workplace. I do understand my colleague's good intention. But what I don't understand is the mentality of people who cannot stand hearing or talking with people who have different points of view. Actually, I love to talk with people who have distinct ideas. First, I like to listen some new information or information from different points of view. Second, I enjoy discussion which I can express my opinions and practice debate skill. Third, discussion is an interesting activity to have some fun for me.
But result is that, several times, people said I like to quarrel. Seriously, I never force them to believe me and never use bad words. It was harsh words sometimes, but not really rude ones :P Also, many time, I told them I gave up because I really could not find a better reason to say back. But I am still battlesome for them.
In my country, political opinions are separated into two sides: Red and Yellow. Friends fight with friends, mom argues with dad, siblings hate each other just because they stand for different colors. Some even got injured from the reason. I'm not saying which is better because even I like the ideology of one of them but I am not agree with the way they pursue their goals. Anyway, no matter red or yellow they are, I respect their belief even I still have some doubts sometimes.
It is a long way for Thailand to go for a real democracy. First thing we need to change is our mentality. However, it is a time-consuming process. I do hope it will not be a life-consuming process like what we did in the past. Thailand is changing... let's see where we are going from now.
