Am I a Nerd???

At an office place, my bf and I were working on network connection.

BF:  Today, we need to connect this wire to the box in the network room. Last time DataWatch guy left the door open. How many possibility do you think we will find the door open today?

Me: Ummmm

BF: Come on, you said you are good at math. This is a very easy question.

Me: Ummmm

BF: Why you think so hard. It's 50/50 possibility, open or close, right?

Me: No... In the ideal world, it suppose to be 0 possibility because DataWatch guy suppose not to leave the door open. But in the real world, we need to consider human error. And I don't know how many DataWatch guy work for this door and how many time they come by. So, I cannot find the possibility here.

BF: ...................ah... you're right.......

5 minutes later...

Me:...... (Think to myself)..... Am I a nerd???

How can we learn about a society

This article responds to a GRE prompt : To Understand the Most Important Characteristics of a Society, One Must Study Its Major Cities.

Society is a group of people connected by some social systems as well as sharing resources and benefits. Each society has its unique characteristics. Some societies are small, some are enormous. No matter what size a society is, it is too complicate to gain understanding of a society's characteristics by investigating its major cities. For the better way to learn about a society, one may learn from the society's components such as its traditions, laws, artworks, and so on. Also, one can investigate different aspects of a society from different cities, not only the major places. Moreover, one need to consider people as the most important characteristic of a society, not its places.

Important components of a society are, for instance, its traditions, laws, artworks, and beliefs. Each component can convey attributes of the society. For example, "wai", a Thai tradition of paying respect to older people or people who has higher status, can convey Thai society's value. Thai people "wai" by putting both hands together in front of one chest and low one's head a little bit, to greed someone they respect. The tradition is telling that Thai people value the seniority and social statuses. In contrast, in USA where people value freedom and equity more, people can say "Hello" to everybody regardless the difference of ages and social statuses.

Furthermore, one can misunderstand a society not only because he ignore some social components mentioned above, but also concentrate too much on geographical locations of a society. Major cities are usually important cities in term of politics and economic. For example, major cities of US are such as Washington DC, New York, and California. Washington DC is a capital of US, New York is one of the biggest business cities, and California is one of the most attractive tourist cities. However, these cities cannot demonstrate the whole important characteristics of US society which is one of the most diverse society. Some less famous cities in Midwest region such as Illinois, Missouri, and Akasas also transfer some important characteristics of US society such as agricultural characteristics and some local lifestyles that cannot be found in those major cities mention earlier.

In addition to that, characteristics of a society can be observed by learning about its people. One do not need to go to some specific physical places to learn about people a society. One can observe people behaviors, attitudes, opinions, and so on from some traditional and online media such as newspaper, television, Facebook, and Twitter. Not only from media, social characteristics can be investigated from talking with people on the street, listening to public speeches, and so on.

Studying a society is a complicate issue and cannot be done by going to and learning about a society's major cities. Other components such as traditions, laws, and artworks can be a good source of information. In some society especially societies with diversity like US, information from distinct places are critical. Nevertheless, human is the most important component of a society and cannot be overlooked in social study.

A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college?

A government may demand/compel/ instruct nationwide schools to provide the same curriculum to their students in order to make certain that the new generation of its population is indoctrinated into the country's priorities. However, this approach is probably not the best way to strengthen a nation. The practice might result in negative results because each student is different in interest in learning and ability to absorb. To assert a country priorities can be done in many ways depending on the suitable of place and time. Also, to be a powerful nation today, it needs to value in both loyalty and creativity of its people.

A nation leader might consider creating and applying the same national curriculum to all students as a way to direct a single direction of the country. However, this approach can result in unwanted outcomes such as the failure of national education, disagreement among people, and so on. One point that the government need to realize is that each student is different. Individual has differences in learning style, interest, and behavior. Moreover, nothing fits all. Some students might lack interests in what they are taught and, finally, they are failed in the school. With unqualified population, a nation impossibly grow strong.

In addition, the alternative curriculum can increase the successful rate in nation's education. The reason is that students can have their choices of educational pace that they are interested in and ready to learn. There are numerous ways to insert its priorities to the diverse curriculum. Applying a varieties of curriculum that suit to learners may need the government to put more effort into it. However, it is worth.

Last but not least, modern society values in creativity and innovation. To have these attributes, one need opened and innovative environment. For instance, United State is one of the powerful countries because its scientific advance. US is also a country of freedom where its people can make their own choices and choose their path. In contrary, controlling people by limiting what they have to learn can inhibit the blossom of new ideas and creativity. As the result, the country cannot catch up with the world which move fast and change everyday.

While some people believe that committing people with the single curriculum lead to a stronger nation, there are several reasons showing that providing alternative curriculum to students so that they can have chance to go with the right one generate more positive results. The students with a appropriate curriculum have higher possibility to succeed in their education. To ensure the right direction of a society, there are more than one way to educate a nation's people the country's priorities. At the same time, the nation's people are encouraged to be more creative and innovative which can bring about a better development of the country.

WorldWideScience.org: A Global Scientific and Research Database

Today is an era of information, technology, and collaboration. A large number of agencies and organizations are working hard to apply cutting age technologies to their works such as to generate efficient repositories, to create new services for their users, and so on. Another hot topic they are focusing on is to establish digital community where people with common interests collect together, share knowledge and experiences, and collaborate for a common goal. However, according to my observation, they are not there yet. There is still a lot to do. Nevertheless, they are having a good start.

Today, I attended a meeting about a worldwide project called WorldWideScience.org which is an attempt to create a digital global scientific and research database. The program is a collaboration among scientific and research organizations and agencies from around the world. Yet, not all countries are participating the program. Indeed, the program has been running for a decade with periodic developments. Those development were, for example, increasing the number of database, gaining collaboration from more parties, and so on.

The meeting today was led by Brian Hitson, Associate Director of the Office of Scientific and Technical Information, U.S. Department of Energy. Hitson presented three big changes in the program responded to the shift of today technology and society.

First and foremost, the program is going to be in a multi-language context. Supported by Microsoft, the WorldWideScience search engine can translate inquiries and search results to several languages; there are nine languages available now. Although, the translation is not perfectly accurate, the translated results can assist users to have some ideas of what the results are about and save time for searching. They also expect to expand their users with this function.

Secondly, the program provide multimedia database such as images, videos, and audios. Multimedia database can promote the wealth of knowledge. In addition, it can draw new users.

Thirdly, the program is going mobile. Now, users can access the database via their smart phone, tablet, and other mobile media. It can be said that, as the world keep moving forward, information and knowledge can be accessed any time and place.

These three main modifications, the program is expected to provide better services and acquire more collaboration. If you would like to have more information, you can go to www.worldwidescience.org.

Know About Doctors' Specialties

It has been almost 5 years that I had never seen a doctor for any medical checkup or treatment. I realize that it is really important to have regular checkups, at lease once in a year. I told myself, "Let's do it. Don't leave it too long. I don't want any surprise." So I decided to have a health insurance and see a doctor.

I looked at doctors' names in my area from my insurance website. As an foreigner, I was confused about the doctors' specialties. I know some of them because I used to take GRE exam before, that's how I learn about some vocabularies that I rarely use in my daily life. Actually, it is a basic knowledge that we suppose to know. So I looked online again and found a "Doctors' Specialties List" from a website (http://www.mchdata.com/mch_resources/glossaries/doctors.html). Thank you for the source.  :)

My Friend Told Me Not to Talk About Politics

Thai General Election 2011 is coming close. Some people start to talk more about politics, while some are keeping their mouth shut. I have to say that I know some, just some, about politics but I do have a political preference. And I am willing to talk about it when joining political discussions with friends or others.

One day, one of my colleagues told me not to talk about my political opinions with some groups of people in my workplace. I do understand my colleague's good intention. But what I don't understand is the mentality of people who cannot stand hearing or talking with people who have different points of view. Actually, I love to talk with people who have distinct ideas. First, I like to listen some new information or information from different points of view. Second, I enjoy discussion which I can express my opinions and practice debate skill. Third, discussion is an interesting activity to have some fun for me.

But result is that, several times, people said I like to quarrel. Seriously, I never force them to believe me and never use bad words. It was harsh words sometimes, but not really rude ones :P  Also, many time, I told them  I gave up because I really could not find a better reason to say back. But I am still battlesome for them.

In my country, political opinions are separated into two sides: Red and Yellow. Friends fight with friends, mom argues with dad, siblings hate each other just because they stand for different colors. Some even got injured from the reason. I'm not saying which is better because even I like the ideology of one of them but I am not agree with the way they pursue their goals. Anyway, no matter red or yellow they are, I respect their belief even I still have some doubts sometimes.

It is a long way for Thailand to go for a real democracy. First thing we need to change is our mentality. However, it is a time-consuming process. I do hope it will not be a life-consuming process like what we did in the past. Thailand is changing... let's see where we are going from now.

Social media and communications technologies might be enemies in classrooms for some teachers. However, if they are ready to catch up with the trends and technologies in today information era, social media and communication technologies are interesting and useful tools for them!

The 50 Most Innovative Companies

If someone asks you to mention some of the biggest global technology companies, I believe most people can come up with some names easily; for instance Samsung, Hitashi, Intel, Microsoft, GE, HP, and so on. Technology Review (April 2011) have created a new agenda for the most innovative companies worldwide. Why “innovative”?
According to Amitabh Shukla, innovation may be defined as exploiting new ideas leading to the creation of a new product, process, or service. Innovation has a vital role in today and future business world especially in technology business where things change quickly. Innovation help a company discover consumers’ unmet needs and create a new market.
Brian Bergstein, Technology Review (April 2011) have listed 50 most innovative companies or companies that others are trying to follow or imitate. I have some examples here:
«information from this part is from TR (April 2011)»
Goldwind
Why: Increasing the time that turbines are operational will lower the cost of wind power. Key Innovation Co-developed a direct-drive wind turbine that eliminates the need for a gearbox. Having fewer moving parts reduces the chance of costly mechanical failure.
Toyota
Why: Hybrid cars can significantly reduce gasoline consumption by using an electric motor alongside a gasoline
HTC
Why: Smart phones that run Android have become an alternative to Apple’s mobile devices.  Key innovation: Designed well-crafted devices in partnership with Google and wireless carriers.
Amazon.com
Why: E-books are finally becoming a large, mainstream market. Key innovation: Even as it seeded the e-book market with the Kindle, Amazon has made it easy for people to read e-books on others devices, such as the iPad.
Google
Why: It still sets the agenda in Web search, even as it pushes the development of Android for mobile devices. Key innovation: Its software development process remains relatively fast even as the company has gotten very big.
Complete Genomics
Why: Many doctors and researchers lack the resources to sequence genomes and analyze them themselves. Key innovation: Sells sequencing as a service, analyzing DNA samples that customers send in.
Roche
Why: Drugs that target genetic mutations unique to cancer cells may be more effective than ones that act more broadly. Key innovation: A new drug blocks the effects of a mutation thought to be present in as many as 8 percent of all cancers.
Calxeda
Why: Its technology can reduce the cost of computing in data centers. Key innovation: Runs servers with cell-phone chip rather than processors built on industry-standard designs, which are more power-hungry.
Square
Why: Expanding the use of mobile payments will help small businesses. Key innovation: Built technology that lets anyone accept credit cards using smart phone.
Facebook
Why: Social networking on the Web is becoming a powerful advertising medium and a platform for startups that offer add-on services.  Key innovation: Adapts quickly to shape its site into a medium that advertisers consistently want to use.
Claros Diagnostics
Why: Simple, fast diagnostic test can help physicians track disease-related markers. Key innovation: Its microfluidic device for doctors’ offices can quickly detect elevated protein levels associated with prostate cancer.

Let's go get some designer clothes

I'm not a designer clothes lover. Actually, you can barely find designer clothes or brand name stuff in my closet. I just don't want to spend extra money for a logo on my shirt, advertisement for marketers, and something else I don't want. Make it short... I'm stingy. :) But after I read an article about experiment on designer clothes and people's perception, I changed my attitude.

Basically, a designer brand logo on the clothes you are wearing is a label of yourself. Rob Nelissen and Marijn Meijers of Tilburg University in the Natherlands conducted experitments to see if brand name logos on clothes had some effects on people perception. Here were experiments they did:

First Experiment The researchers showed pictures of a guy in polo shirt. All pictures were same but some with designer brand logos such as Lacoste or Hilfiger on the shirt and some without logos on the shirt. The result was that volunteers rated the guys with designer brand logo on their shirts were wealthier and had higher status (3.5 for Lacoste and 3.47 for Hilfiger, on a five-point scale) than the guys with no logo on their shirts (2.91 for no logo).

Yes... we can get higer scores when we are in designer cloth. But how is that important to our lives?

Second Experiment The researchers know that designer brand logo affected to people perception, then they want to know if that had some influent on people's behavior. The research sent their female assistants asked people in a shopping mall to stop and answer questionnairs. One day, they were there in sweaters with designer logo on and another day they wore the same design of sweaters but with out logo on. The result showed that 52% of people in the Mall stopped and answered the questionnaires with the assistants who wore sweater with logo while only 13% stopped and answered the questionnaires with the assistants who wore sweater without logo.

The number were obviously different. And if you are going for a job interview, you probably need designer clothes also if you know about the third experiment they did.

Third Experiment In this experiment, volunteers watch one of two videos of the same man being interviewed for a job. The man wore cloths with desiger brand logo on in one video and with out a logo in the other. Volunteers rated the man in cloths with logo as more suitable for the job and gave him 9% higher salary recommendation.

There were some other experiments showing that one with designer clothes were more trustable and were able to collect more money for charity.

Dr. Nelissen and Dr. Meijers said this is the same as why the peacock with the best tail gets all the girls. Also this mechanism works among human. If everyone perceive something in the same way, so that become the it become reality.

CRIMINAL LAW

Criminal law involves government prosecution of an individual for an act that is classified as a crime. Criminal cases are tried through a state prosecutor who initiates the criminal law cases. Individuals who are convicted of a crime may be incarcerated, fined, or a combination of both.

Criminal law crimes include both felonies and misdemeanors. Felonies are serious criminal offenses that are punishable by a term of imprisonment anywhere from one year until death.  Misdemeanors are crimes punishable by fines or imprisonment for up to one year.

Most criminal law crimes consist of two key elements; an act and a mental state. Criminal law prosecutors have to prove all elements of the criminal law crime to gain a conviction. In addition, the criminal law prosecutor must convince a jury or judge “beyond a reasonable doubt” of all facts needed to validate the guilt of the crime being charged.

If you are being faced with criminal charges, the penalties can tremendously affect your future.   It is important to have a skilled and knowledgeable attorney on your side.  An attorney from Northern Virginia Law Group can challenge the charges or minimize the consequences.  Contact us today for your free consultation.
