At an office place, my bf and I were working on network connection.

BF:  Today, we need to connect this wire to the box in the network room. Last time DataWatch guy left the door open. How many possibility do you think we will find the door open today?

Me: Ummmm

BF: Come on, you said you are good at math. This is a very easy question.

Me: Ummmm

BF: Why you think so hard. It's 50/50 possibility, open or close, right?

Me: No... In the ideal world, it suppose to be 0 possibility because DataWatch guy suppose not to leave the door open. But in the real world, we need to consider human error. And I don't know how many DataWatch guy work for this door and how many time they come by. So, I cannot find the possibility here.

BF: ...................ah... you're right.......

How can we learn about a society

This article responds to a GRE prompt : To Understand the Most Important Characteristics of a Society, One Must Study Its Major Cities.

Society is a group of people connected by some social systems as well as sharing resources and benefits. Each society has its unique characteristics. Some societies are small, some are enormous. No matter what size a society is, it is too complicate to gain understanding of a society's characteristics by investigating its major cities. For the better way to learn about a society, one may learn from the society's components such as its traditions, laws, artworks, and so on. Also, one can investigate different aspects of a society from different cities, not only the major places. Moreover, one need to consider people as the most important characteristic of a society, not its places.

Important components of a society are, for instance, its traditions, laws, artworks, and beliefs. Each component can convey attributes of the society. For example, "wai", a Thai tradition of paying respect to older people or people who has higher status, can convey Thai society's value. Thai people "wai" by putting both hands together in front of one chest and low one's head a little bit, to greed someone they respect. The tradition is telling that Thai people value the seniority and social statuses. In contrast, in USA where people value freedom and equity more, people can say "Hello" to everybody regardless the difference of ages and social statuses.

Furthermore, one can misunderstand a society not only because he ignore some social components mentioned above, but also concentrate too much on geographical locations of a society. Major cities are usually important cities in term of politics and economic. For example, major cities of US are such as Washington DC, New York, and California. Washington DC is a capital of US, New York is one of the biggest business cities, and California is one of the most attractive tourist cities. However, these cities cannot demonstrate the whole important characteristics of US society which is one of the most diverse society. Some less famous cities in Midwest region such as Illinois, Missouri, and Akasas also transfer some important characteristics of US society such as agricultural characteristics and some local lifestyles that cannot be found in those major cities mention earlier.

In addition to that, characteristics of a society can be observed by learning about its people. One do not need to go to some specific physical places to learn about people a society. One can observe people behaviors, attitudes, opinions, and so on from some traditional and online media such as newspaper, television, Facebook, and Twitter. Not only from media, social characteristics can be investigated from talking with people on the street, listening to public speeches, and so on.

Studying a society is a complicate issue and cannot be done by going to and learning about a society's major cities. Other components such as traditions, laws, and artworks can be a good source of information. In some society especially societies with diversity like US, information from distinct places are critical. Nevertheless, human is the most important component of a society and cannot be overlooked in social study.

A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college?

A government may demand/compel/ instruct nationwide schools to provide the same curriculum to their students in order to make certain that the new generation of its population is indoctrinated into the country's priorities. However, this approach is probably not the best way to strengthen a nation. The practice might result in negative results because each student is different in interest in learning and ability to absorb. To assert a country priorities can be done in many ways depending on the suitable of place and time. Also, to be a powerful nation today, it needs to value in both loyalty and creativity of its people.

A nation leader might consider creating and applying the same national curriculum to all students as a way to direct a single direction of the country. However, this approach can result in unwanted outcomes such as the failure of national education, disagreement among people, and so on. One point that the government need to realize is that each student is different. Individual has differences in learning style, interest, and behavior. Moreover, nothing fits all. Some students might lack interests in what they are taught and, finally, they are failed in the school. With unqualified population, a nation impossibly grow strong.

In addition, the alternative curriculum can increase the successful rate in nation's education. The reason is that students can have their choices of educational pace that they are interested in and ready to learn. There are numerous ways to insert its priorities to the diverse curriculum. Applying a varieties of curriculum that suit to learners may need the government to put more effort into it. However, it is worth.

Last but not least, modern society values in creativity and innovation. To have these attributes, one need opened and innovative environment. For instance, United State is one of the powerful countries because its scientific advance. US is also a country of freedom where its people can make their own choices and choose their path. In contrary, controlling people by limiting what they have to learn can inhibit the blossom of new ideas and creativity. As the result, the country cannot catch up with the world which move fast and change everyday.

While some people believe that committing people with the single curriculum lead to a stronger nation, there are several reasons showing that providing alternative curriculum to students so that they can have chance to go with the right one generate more positive results. The students with a appropriate curriculum have higher possibility to succeed in their education. To ensure the right direction of a society, there are more than one way to educate a nation's people the country's priorities. At the same time, the nation's people are encouraged to be more creative and innovative which can bring about a better development of the country.
